As an electrical engineer major there are many different opportunities for me to expand and further my education outside of the classroom. The most obvious choice is to find an internship somewhere over the summer. Most engineers here at Miami have to go to the business fair and interview for some type of internship. I’m a little bit luckier. Two of my uncles work at RCA in Indiana. I could easily go there and shadow either of them and get a firsthand experience for what I might be doing in the future. I personally believe that you learn the most when you actually do it. By following them I wouldn’t only see what they do but I would get to help but in a very small way of course.
RCA is not the only option though. Every year the University of Dayton has summer internships that they run. You spend the summer not only working on projects but taking small classes about how to be an engineer. The cool thing about this place is some of the projects they work on are for the US Air Force. The main thing I like about this place is that you don’t have to wait until your sophomore or junior year to go here. They offer programs for freshmen and even students right out of high school. These are just two of the many ways anyone in the engineering field can go out and get hands on experience and really learn how to do their future job.
